Formed by Swedish prog legend Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic), the band also includes Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Jonas Reingold (The Flower Kings, Karmakanic), American keyboardist Tom Brislin (Yes, Camel), and German drummer Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson). This diverse lineup combines their rich musical backgrounds to create a sound that is both expansive and innovative.
The idea for The Sea Within began in late 2016 when Stolt discussed the concept of a new collaborative group with Thomas Waber, founder of Inside Out Music. The band members began writing and recording material together in early 2017, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album in June 2018. The album, recorded over six months, features lush, cinematic compositions that blend modern progressive rock with elements of pop, electronic, heavy rock, folk, and jazz. Guest performances from prog icons like Jon Anderson of Yes and Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater further elevate the album, making The Sea Within a must-listen for fans of innovative and genre-defying music.
